Today the wonderful Catherine Bybee stops by and talks about conventions . . . I have to admit that a convention is where I first met Catherine and got hooked on her books! She's a sweet lady and a lot of fun!
Can we talk conventions?
The first large convention was the Romantic Times Convention
in LA. It was at the Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. I’d never been to a
convention and could barely afford the fee and hotel.
I’d just met my roommate, TJ, who happened to have read my
first full-length novel and attended my very first book signing just a few
months before the convention. We didn’t know each other well, but were both
geeky fans of romance and couldn’t wait to dive into the fray of readers and
writers, agents and publishers.
We drove to LA since we both live in Southern California.
When I drove into the valet parking, the attendant informed me that it was
going to cost forty bucks a day to park. I looked at TJ, then back to the
overpriced car guy and said, “Dude, I need eat while I’m here.”
He laughed and pointed me to the garage across the way that
was eight bucks. Oh, yeah, baby…now I can eat.
I will never forget that first con…the one that started so
many things. I’m happy to report just a few short years later, that TJ and I
always attend RT together. We now share a suite and can afford to park.
